The Auxiliary’s clothing program is one of the organization’s most meaningful services to benefit patients. Many patients are admitted with nothing but the clothing they are wearing. The clothing “boutique” offers them the opportunity to browse through and select clothing, shoes, undergarments and grooming aids at no cost, which they take with them when they leave the hospital. In addition to adding to their personal comfort, the experience helps to improve the patients’ self-image and quality of life. The program operates out of a trailer donated by the Auxiliary and staffed by Auxiliary Members that serves as a location to store, sort and distribute clothing and personal items provided through in-kind and monetary donations.

spMajor Fundraising
sp WhatClothPic

1997-1998: the Auxiliary raised over $17,000 to refurbish the landscaping of the interior patient courtyard. In addition to new grass, trees, plants and shrubs and concrete walkways, tables and benches, a space was created for patients to plant and tend a garden.

2003-2005: with the support of Auxiliary members and friends, $21,000 was raised for hospital improvements. The Hospital received a new 8'x10' modular storage unit; music in the Acute Inpatient Unit with a 5 year lease for equipment and 60 channels of music programming selected by Hospital staff; an improved TTY system for communication with deaf and mute patients; and a new mural in the Crisis Clinic reception area.

spHospital Staff Support
The Auxiliary sponsors recognition programs for Hospital staff members, including gift certificates for the Employee of the Month and various other staff appreciation events held throughout the year.
spInstitutional Amenities
The Auxiliary enhances the lives of patients by providing amenities to make the institutional environment more comfortable. Some of the Auxiliary’s donations have included:
  • Carpeting for the hospital units (ongoing, on a rotating basis)
  • Artwork, including a colorful mural in the Crisis Clinic Reception Area, designed and painted by a mental health client.
  • Van
  • Indoor plants
  • Televisions
  • Exercise equipment
  • Musical instruments
  • Board games
  • Videos
  • Karaoke machine
  • A hospital-wide satellite TV system

spPhoto/Text Exhibit
The Auxiliary seeks to educate the public about mental illness through its powerful and inspiring photo/text exhibit, AGAINST ALL ODDS- ADVOCATING FOR PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS. Driven by anguish over her son’s mental illness, photographer Lisa Kanemoto turned her camera on people with mental illnesses and their families and the problems of the mental health care system.
